Issue: Report on Balkh public hospital fire.
Date: 23/septembar 2006
Dear sir/madam
I would like to present the report with too much sorrow on tragedic
phenomenon of the focal building fire located at Mazar central
hospital. This fire happened due to an unexpected electromotive
flashing by 2:00 pm on Tuesday 28/06/1385.
Mazar hospital- the only unique referral and specialty offering
hospital in northern region is constituted of one main building and two
subordinate buildings. Organizationally, this is a 500 - bed hospital
having actively 400 beds and soon after completion of Bayat 100- bed
hospital which is under the process of construction -it reaches 500
beds. The building at which the event happened was the main central
building of the hospital contained 70 rooms including operation
theatre, diagnostic rooms for radiology, endoscopy, ultrasonography,
recovery rooms and directorate office. This building had the total
capacity of 300 beds, in fact ,making 75% of the whole capacity of the
hospital. the very building was established in 1318 according to 1940
and was put in use in 1322 according to 1944 .The yesterday fire event
started from a small room located by the head doctors room, the
small room from which the fire started was specified for keeping
blankets , bed sheets and spongy mattresses which were all expired
unusable and it was the place for collecting the above items and when
getting too much then these items are to be released for putting on
fire .
As some hospital staff reported the fire begun due to an electromotive
flashing with loud noise and immediately the fire appeared .Since the
ceilings of the room and the whole building was made of the three
layered wood- soon after flash the fire conducted to the wood having
been so much dry and so able to get on fire .Also the roof
completely was on fire. The hospital staff suddenly contacted the
fire station while they became aware of the issue and they themselves
also made attempt to stop the fire despite arrival of the governmental
in -charges including the local governmental authority the
military forces , the security officer head of the national
security ,all the governmental administrative responsibles and the fire
fighters teams from ISAF , Kodobarq ,security base and water tanks of
the military forces. The fire could not be stopped so that the fire was
actively going on till 12:00 by that night.
Although the fire deteriorated the whole building and changed it to a
ruin ,it is to be thankful that because of serious efforts made by the
hospital staff and due to the assistance of the people who spared no
diligence for stopping the fire –no patient or medical staff got
injured or affected .Furthermore ,we could rescue some what major
materials ,technical and non-technical equipments including diagnostic
& therapeutic instruments , medical equipments, medicines,
patients'beds ,furniture ,documents and written sheets even the
curtains , light sheets …..Etc .However ,we got no damage attributed to
human ,we could at least rescue important medical equipments .
With destruction of this construction the hospital lost its 75% of the
capacity .However, we had numerous regular sessions with various
different organizations during last night and today so as to
rehabilitate and regain the lost working capacity and prolongation of
our services to the people .As a result of the sessions each of
the participants promised to cooperate us within some short
terms. Among the participants Mazar ISAF and PRT part-takings including
German &Norwegian friends is mentionable .We expect you to have a
specific look at the very event and to rescue the people of Balkh
province and north region from this major misery .

Zentralkrankenhaus in
Mazar-i-Sharif abgebrannt
Das Hauptgebäude des Zentralkrankenhauses in
Mazar-i-Sharif ist am
22. September 2006 ausgebrannt.
